Wolves keep forests nutrient-rich

Wolves keep forests nutrient-rich - As hunting wolves is legal again in two American states, Montana and Idaho, researchers have discovered an important role these large predators play in creating nutrient hotspots in northern forest environments. Researchers from Michigan Technological University found that when wolves take down their prey—in this case moose—they do more than simply keep a check on herbivore populations. The corpses of wolf-hunted moose create hotspots of forest fertility by enriching the soil with biochemicals.

A Cat and a Nest

One spring I had been watching a pair of mourning doves cooing together on the branch of a tree outside my window for some time. I wondered if they would nest nearby. I didn't have long to wait. In a few days I looked out at another tree closer to the house, and saw the pair traveling back and forth building a nest. It was fun watching the whole process until the eggs broke open and four naked nestlings said hello to the world.

Nature in Winter

It's winter, in some places snow is falling, and it's cold. All of nature is asleep or dormant. Or is it? There's more nature active in the winter than you might think. I was talking to my son in Colorado and our conversation turned to bunnies. Do they hibernate? we wondered. I didn't think so, but as usual when I'm not sure about something, I looked it up. I found that no, they don't hibernate. They sometimes use the burrows of woodchucks, skunks and badgers for protection, or find shelter in dense shrubs or other plant growth.

Has anyone visited the Wild Animal Park in San Diego recently and can anyone provide some insight into their experiences there. I have small kids and would like to manage my time as best as possible to see the most. Is the park easily walkable, how much time should I plan to spend there, how many days?
